it's that time of the year when holiday dinners are around every corner, and who doesn't want to spruce up the kitchen a little bit to celebrate? thanksgiving happens to be my favorite dinner, and i thought it would be fun to give the thanksgiving table a bright, cheery new look.
all it took was a little inspiration from Andy Warhol to create these easy to make pop-art turkey block printed napkins. whether you make these napkins for your own thanksgiving table, a hostess gift, or for everyday use, the bright colors are sure to be a hit.
materials:
four 20"x20" cloth napkins (i used pre-made Stitch 'Em Up Dinner Napkins)
Martha Stewart Satin Acrylic Craft Paint and Tintable Fabric Medium
foam paintbrush
carving block and tools (more information about Speedball carving block options here)
iron
optional: bristle paintbrush
instructions:
1. download and print turkey template (right-click image and save to computer).
2. trace template onto carving block and carve around edges.
3. wash and dry napkins to remove sizing.
4. fold each napkin in half twice and use iron to crease fold lines.
5. mix acrylic paint with fabric medium, 2 parts paint to 1 part medium as directed.
6. apply paint to raised areas of carving block with sponge brush.
7. press block to fabric, using center crease to align block.
8. reapply paint and press block, rotated 90 degrees, using center crease and outer border as guidelines
9. print four images in one quadrant of each napkin.

10. if desired, fill in/touch up prints with a paintbrush.
11. wash/rinse block and paint brushes. repeat process with additional colors until all napkins are printed.
12. air dry for 24 hours. heat set with iron before washing.
i thought it would be fun to complement our new turkey napkins with a tea towel for the kitchen, but wanted something a little different. i kept with the bright color palette, but enlarged the turkey silhouette and chopped it up into pieces. yummy pieces, that is... wing, thigh, drumstick, breast, and tenderloin.
to do this, i carved separate blocks for each piece and stamped them individually. you could also use one large stamp and apply the paint colors to separate areas before printing.
i think these napkins and tea towel will be perfect for thanksgiving dinner and beyond! want to spruce up your own turkey day table? check out the Jo-Ann craft catalog here and use this coupon too:
happy stitching!
