my girls and i got to meet Katie from The Red Kitchen last summer, so Kahlin was beyond excited when i told her that Katie wrote a book and she could pick something to make from it. Katie's book, Simple Sewing: 30 Fast and Easy Projects for Beginners
(affiliate link), is full of great projects for beginners, kids, or even more advanced sewists looking for a quick gift.

Kahlin decided that she would make the pencil case for her teacher for christmas. this sweet girl rarely picks out projects to make for herself... of course, she sometimes ends up changing her mind about giving them away after she's made them, but i think this one is going to make it to the recipient. in fact, she's been trying to come up with excuses to give it to him before christmas for the last few days.
she also chose the fabrics herself... because blue is her favorite color and because the lining "has words on it" (her teacher likes reading and writing). she did all of the stitching herself. some of it quite slowly, like around this velcro, and all very carefully.
it made this sewing mama quite proud to watch Kahlin read through all of the directions and follow each step carefully. and she's quite proud of her pencil case, so i suppose i shouldn't be surprised that she wants to give it to her teacher early.
here's a chance to win your own copy of Simple Sewing: 30 Fast and Easy Projects for Beginners!

happy stitching!
