DIY: alternative christmas tree tutorial

last year, the dog peed on our (fake) tree, so we knew we needed something new this year. on black friday, armed with a $50 gift card, Nick and I perused the Jo-Ann's site, looking for items we could somehow turn into a tree. let's just say that it seemed like a fabulous(ly festive) idea at the time. we were possibly must have been drinking.

here is what we ordered: drapery rod, floral wire, and five macrame rings (sizes 12", 10", 8", 6", and 4") for about $40. i also purchased a bucket and two 40 pound bags of rocks from the hardware store for just under $8.

before i tell you how to make your own, i'll tell you that we gave up on this project. true story. we plotted, planned, crafted, laughed, and then went shopping... but we'll get to that.

first, what not to do. do not attempt to use floral wire. after measuring six wires, cutting, attaching, wrapping, and rewrapping, we realized that we were basically making a giant mess of an upside-down tomato cage. (in related news: i found this tutorial two days later. ha!)

yup, it was a big ol' hot mess. we really did throw in the towel, and went out to buy a new tree. except then we started talking about how we had already poured 80 pounds of rocks into a bucket that had a leveled pole sticking out of it in our living room, and that maybe we could make it work.

next thing you know, we're on our way back home with macrame cord, a spool of extra strong thread, and a new plan. here's what we did:

1. measure six 60" lengths of cord. use a darning needle to put one piece of the extra strong thread through the cord for each of the macrame rings, each 13" apart.
2. wrap cord through top of drapery rod and use clips to temporarily attach.
3. hold each ring in place and tie (tightly!) with thread.
4. adjust cord at top of rod as needed to level out rings.
5. thread needle, go through all cords around rod, and knot to hold in place.
6. decorate!!

we looped four strands of lights through the top of the rod, tucking the ends and plug into the bucket. then we hung our favorite handmade ornaments from the rings. it's really quite festive and fabulous! the girls are smitten, the pets haven't peed on anything, and this tree's slim stature is quite convenient for our small living room. all wins!!

happy holidays!
