I’m so excited to be kicking off Hey June Kids’ Week here on the Imagine Gnats blog with my embroidered Hatteras. Now that temperatures are more fall-like in my area, I’ve started pulling the tanks and shorts out of the kids’ closets to make room for warmer clothes.

Like many moms I’m sure, I always hope a few things may still fit from the previous year, and they almost never do! My oldest in particular, is in need of some cozy basics for school that actually fit. Enter the Hatteras Hoodie pattern from Hey June.

I’ve sewn many Hey June patterns in the past, but this is my first time making the Hatteras. Let me tell you, this pattern gives you some major bang for your buck.

There are 3 views to mix and match included. It can be made for boys or girls, AND it comes in size 2 through 14/16. As a mother of three little ones, I know this is going to be a go-to pattern for years to come.

I went back and forth on which view to make, but ended up going with view B- the scoop neck with twisted side seams and high/low hem.

While those cute twisted side seams were the real sell for view B, I also thought it would be the best canvas to play around with my new favorite pastime- hand embroidery.

Did you know the Imagine Gnat Shop also carries embroidery floss? The Cosmo floss I used for this project was a delight to work with: super smooth and easy to separate. I was also impressed with the vibrancy of the colors, perfect for this kaleidoscope of hand-stitched butterflies.

The fabric for the sweatshirt is a lovely oatmeal french terry from the shop (which is now sold out but you can find a lot of other nice french terry here). It is a really nice medium weight: light enough to be layered, but still substantial enough on its own.

I should mention that I did reinforce the front panel with some lightweight interfacing, but only for the sake of extra stability for the embroidery.

As my kids are getting older, they want to have more input on what I make them. Since I typically sew more for my kids than myself, I was a bit disappointed to think that I was losing some of the control over my makes.

I have to tell you though, that in reality, it’s made it more enjoyable. My daughter came up with the idea for butterflies and picked the colors out on her own. I think she did a fantastic job!

Now I’d be lying if I didn’t tell you that I make suggestions once in a while or give choices from a limited variety of fabrics that I’ve already decided would work well. We can just leave that between you and me, right? ;)

She’s as happy as a clam about her butterfly sweatshirt and I love it too. It’s a great example of how you can elevate some practical basics with a few special details. I think you’ll find that capability within a lot of the Hey June kids patterns.

They are perfectly amazing on their own, but also a great starting point to mix things up and add your own take. I hope you enjoyed reading this embroidered Hatteras post and will check back for more amazing garments this week from our team of contributors!
