This post is written by Tiffany Judd of Mama Duck Makes.

I am so excited to share a sewing first for me. I made my first coat, and what a satisfying sew it was! I have been wanting to make a coat for too long, so I finally decided to tackle The Berlin Coat for one of our girls, and I am so pleased with how this Ventana Twill Berlin Coat turned out.

This pattern provides so many possibilities, but I knew right away I wanted to make View A because of those beautiful lines and standing collar. I actually made the decision to skip the batting which turned this coat into more of a jacket and perfect for early fall and spring.

This works great for my girls who seem to be hot constantly and don’t like a lot of bulk. Using twill along with the absence of batting, I also chose to leave off the standing collar buttons. I knew they would never actually be buttoned up, and it’s just as cute without them.

This coat was originally intended for our littlest lady as I cut out a size 5, but it ended up being too big for her. That was a huge win because now big sister (at 8) can wear it first, and then it can be handed down to little sis.

I chose to sew the button tabs on the sleeves and back and loved them so much that I later wished I had done the shoulder tabs as well. But those will have to wait until my next one. I use wooden buttons almost exclusively, so this coat was no exception.

The topstitching completely makes the coat and shows off those beautiful lines in the front. This pattern was so great for my first coat as it was easy to follow and produced such a beautiful outcome that leaves me wanting more.

Let’s talk about that beautiful fox colored twill that was such a joy to sew with. I had a hard time choosing a color because there are so many gorgeous ones to pick from in the shop! But this fox color gave me all the fall feels, so it had to be the one. It’s not too bulky, so it flows through the machine wonderfully and gives such a great look and feel.

That back button tab gets me every time. Such a simple and sweet touch that gets the back of the coat some attention too.

And with fun lining, the Berlin Coat can be just as beautiful on the inside as it is on the outside. The lining might be my favorite part because I used the softest flannel from the shop. I chose the Brooklyn Plaid Flannel in white because I thought it paired beautifully with that fox colored ventana twill.

Our girl said it felt like a blanket inside. I want to use it for everything. You can never have too much black and white plaid around, right?

I just love the little added details of a pattern. Some leather found in my stash made for the perfect hook to hang the Ventana Twill Berlin Coat with.

My friends, this twill and flannel are both dreamy and fun so go pick your favorite colors in the shop and sew something beautiful! And now through November 21, you can get 15% off ALL Ventana and stretch twill fabric in the shop with the code 15offtwill!
