Hi there Gnats Readers!
I’m so excited to share my Ventana twill Ellsworth Coat with you today! Making a coat has been on my sewing bucket list for some time now. Since I recently had to say goodbye to a well loved, but past repair ready-to-wear fall jacket, now seemed like the perfect time to finally tackle this project!

I chose to use the Ellsworth Coat pattern from Christine Haynes. Making this coat was simply a delight. I am new to making outerwear, so I can’t tell you whether it’s always this enjoyable. All I know is that the sewing nerd in me just loved the process and seeing how it all came together.
I give so much credit to pattern designers like Christine. who tackle more complicated garments like this. Sometimes as you are working through the steps, you’re kind of scratching your head like, “is this really going to work?” (I’m talking about you, bagged lining!) And then, voila! There you have it. A completely fabulous and legit coat. So fun!

Speaking of fun, lets talk about this fabric guys! I typically go for the neutrals but I wanted this coat to make more of a statement. I chose this plum color twill from the shop and am so happy I did!
I have always thought myself not to be a “purple person” but I’ve come to realize that it’s just the cooler toned hues that don’t quite suit me. This plum twill is warm, saturated, and completely lovely. I think it works really well for fall but could be equally pretty for springtime.

I loved working with this Ventana Twill. It has a nice sturdy weight without being too stiff. It also held up really well to all the handling that goes into a more complex garment, like this fully-lined twill Ellsworth Coat.
I also used another wonderful fabric from the shop for the lining of my Ellsworth. This light pink Rayon Bemberg was the perfect compliment to my plum colored coat. While slippery fabrics are never my favorite to work with, I found that it wasn’t any different than working with a regular rayon. You just can’t beat the polished, professional look it gives a coat like this!

The Imagine Gnats shop has been killing it lately in offering coordinating fabrics to allow you to get all you need to make your garment in one virtual stop. I really appreciate this about the shop. You can find this Ventana Twill and Rayon Bemberg in a wide variety of colorways to make all your coat making dreams come true!
Even more good news, the shop is offering 15% off all Ventana and stretch twill in the shop with code 15offtwill which is good through November 21. Happy Sewing friends!
