I’m slowly being drawn in to the world of wide leg pants and high waists…It’s taken me a while to get there, but these Joan trousers from Friday pattern company have changed my mind, and my new ponte de roma Joan trousers have quickly climbed to the top of my favorite things to wear!
The pants pattern is pretty straight forward to make with only a few pattern pieces to cut out and sew together. The waistband is comfortable too with added elastic ensuring that they won’t slide down and the faux button adds a nice detail.
I sewed a size medium, my waist and hip measurements are 28″ and 35 1/2″, and I chose my size according to my waist seeing that that seemed to be the key fitting spot. I did quickly baste the pants together with the waist band and without the pockets to check the fit and to make sure they weren’t too big in the hips, but they seemed to be perfect.
The pattern was drafted for a 5’5″ person. I am 5′ 2″, but I opted not to shorten them, which is why they appear less cropped on me than they do in the pattern. I really like them this length in fact and feel that having them a little bit longer lends to their versatility.
I sewed them up in olive heavy weight arietta ponte de roma which is really perfect for these pants. The ponte has just the right amount of structure, drape, and heft to allow them to hang nicely and for them to look amazing and the 40%, 2-way stretch makes them oh so comfy! These are for sure “secret pajamas” disguised as dress pants!
I paired them here with a double brushed poly greco tee ; the eggplant and olive pair together so nicely.
But, shortly after slipping these Joans on for the first time, I knew I was going to want to wear them all the time, so I started to play around with other pieces in my wardrobe…
Dressier with flats and my checked hadley top.
Casual with keds and a french terry Linden.
Dressing “like a crayon” with boots and a toaster #2 sweater.
Or more casual with sneakers, a tee, and a jean jacket.
I am truly serious when I say that I could wear these ponte de roma joan trousers every day! I’m already waiting for some new ponte colors to come into the shop for another version!
I mean, when a pair of pants can act as secret pajamas and be super versatile at the same time…
Why wouldn’t you want to make more than one pair!
What about you, have you tried out high waists and wide legs? Are you a fan of “secret pajamas”.
