Hey friends! Today I’m sharing all about my cotton dobby Peplum Top made in the most perfect breezy summer shirting, cotton dobby cloth in red!

I am always on the lookout for breezy non-constrictive tops to wear in our hot, hot summer weather. The past couple of summers I’ve realized that I really prefer a lightweight woven tank as opposed to a knit fabric!

When this cotton dobby cloth landed in my hands, I knew it would become my new favorite summer tank!!
This fabric is super lightweight, 100% cotton, which is perfect for breathability and just floats away from the body in the most dreamy way.

This fabric was easy to cut and sew, as you would expect from 100% cotton. I cut the back of the top on the bias, and since it’s lightweight, it did want to distort a bit when I wasn’t gentle enough in handling it, but a gentle touch was all it needed to behave perfectly.

I do recommend using a new, sharp needle when sewing this fabric. The stripes are slightly raised, almost like embroidery, providing a delicious texture to this beautiful fabric.
There is a wonderful selection of this fabric in the shop, in several beautiful, soft colors that are just perfect for any summer top project! You can see them all HERE.

I chose to make the free Peplum Top from Peppermint Magazine with this fabric, and it was definitely a match made in heaven!
The vertical stripes in the fabric, combined with the various pattern pieces in the top, allowed for some fun stripe play!

I have to admit, that chevron I created with the center back seam really hurt my brain. Oy! I really am good at math, but geometry has always been a little tough, lol. But that v detail in the back, swoon! I had to play it up!

This cotton dobby peplum top was a really fun and quick sew!! I did make a “practice” version before I cut into this beautiful fabric because I had a recent sizing fail on another project, and I was apprehensive!
Thankfully, I chose the correct size the first time, and the second time sewing this pattern took me only about 2 hours! (Not counting cutting, because… geometry. Ha!)

Speaking of sizing, I made size C, based on the finished garment measurements. I highly recommend looking at those before choosing your size since there is a lot of ease built into the pattern!
My measurements are B:36″, W:28.5″, H:38″, putting me in the size D, but size C still gave me 2″ of ease in the bust so I went with it. The only size adjustment I made was to use an 1/8″ smaller seam allowance in the side seams to give me an extra 1/2″ of ease through the bust and waist, but I really don’t think it would have been necessary.

I paired this top with my Chi-Town Chinos made in stretch twill from the shop. You can read the blog post HERE!
