today i'm sharing my english paper piecing for the Travellin' Pic Stitch Blog Hop, hosted by the lovely Laura and Katy (Quokka Quilts and The Littlest Thistle). these lovely ladies are currently on their own american adventure, soaking up the colors while stitching their way through beautiful salt lake city, red rocks in colorado, and the bright lights of vegas... so i thought i'd head west for my inspiration as well.

last january (how has it been nearly a year already?!?), we honeymooned in california. most of our time was spent in napa, but we did spend a day in san fran, where we watched the sun set from golden gate bridge park. Nick snapped this pic on his phone while we were there and it's one of my favorites from the whole trip.

travellin' pic-stitch: inspiration

i was drawn to the gray, steely blue, and burgundy (a word that people apparently don't use anymore?) in the palette, and they made me think of the stacks of Denyse Schmidt charms i have from a swap my lovely friend Jill hosted a while back.

i started with these fabrics:

and stitched them into this:

i started by putting together the triangles, which i thought i would stitch together in long lines, but i ended up really liking all of the secondary patterns created in this layout.

now i just need to decide what to do with it. i'm hoping to make it into something for Nick's birthday, but not sure what yet. bag? pillow? wallet?
