sewing: the maternity bess top

$

to finish up the bess top release week, i'm excited to share a fabulous pattern hack from Tasha of i seam stressed... the maternity bess top!

when i asked Tasha to pattern test, she very kindly reminded me that she is due to have her second baby right about now (if i'm remembering correctly, her actual due date is today!!), but that she just might try her hand at making the bess baby-bump-friendly. i'm so glad that she did, because this is one great pattern hack, plus she looks adorable! see how she did it right here.

(psst. this lucky baby has some sweet stuff already made up... like a pineapple hat! plus check out this august wrap-up post to see the swaddlers and crib sheets and bibs and blankets. oh, plus some adorable dresses and more for her daughter. maybe she'll adopt me?)

happy stitching!

sewing: feathers hosh pants

today i'm sharing a pair of custom painted pants as part of a quilt pattern blog tour!! wait. what?

Alison Glass Design is hosting a giant blog tour, and i got to play around with the new Feathers Quilt Pattern, designed by Alison Glass and Nydia Kehnle (of The ADD Crafter). i've known about this post for ages, but i did that very clever thing where i had an idea of what i would would make all the way up to, oh... two days before this post, and then i completely changed my whole plan. and thank goodness, because i love how these pants turned out! i think Jill was right when she said that procrastination is the mother of awesomesauce.

so, how did i end up with a pair of pants for a blog post about a paper-pieced quilt pattern, you ask? while i absolutely adore this pattern, i was most struck by the combination of shapes and the graphic elements, and for some reason i just felt compelled to pull that into a completely different context.

while i still wanted to make a sewing project, i started wondering how i could use the look of the feathers pattern without sewing that part of the project... enter freezer paper stenciling! but what to stencil ON? the hosh pants by LouBee Clothing, of course! you see, i've sewn many a version of hosh pants (full list here), and i knew this would be the perfect pattern for this project too.

i used the pattern templates to cut out my freezer paper stencil, ironed the stencil to my pattern piece, and then painted. i used pebeo setacolor paints (you can read this paint and my adventures in fabric printing and painting here) for most of the sections, and then i sprayed over the entire stencil with Tulip's fabric glitter spray from Jo-Ann for some serious sparkle.

we ended up with one fabulously unique pair of pants that shine. the pants are made with a stretch twill from Denver Fabrics, and they happen to look fabulous with a tumble tee, if i do say so myself. (knit fabrics from Kitschy Coo and Jo-Ann)

there are lots of great bloggers stitching up projects to celebrate Alison's new fabric collections and patterns! for more inspiration, check out these posts:

craft: handmade costumes cat mask tutorial

$

today i'm sharing how you can make your own cat mask, because it's time for handmade costumes! specifically, the 3rd annual handmade costumes series from The Train to Crazy.

i'll just confess right here that costumes are one of my least favorite sewing projects. i know, i know... sewists everywhere are busy creating fantastic costumes and they are having so much fun! trust me, i'm wowed and inspired. but i'm also painfully practical (at times). i just don't want to make something that will only be worn once. so, making simple and/or reusable costumes has become my yearly halloween challenge.

the girls have always decided their own costumes, but that isn't to say it happens without a little convincing guidance. when Kahlin told me she wanted to be a mushroom, for example, or when Brenna wanted to be princess jasmine but wearing a different outfit (huh?), we decided together that perhaps there was a better costume idea that we would all be happy with.

because i was just not enthused about the idea of morphing pounds of brown felt into a mushroom costume, i asked Kahlin to sketch some other ideas. inspired by this cat and bird print, Super Cat was born!

what we have here is really two costumes in one. girls dressed as cats...

...dressed as super heroes.

we decided on felt masks for the cat portion of the costume, and the great thing about these masks is that they can be made so many ways! (click here to download the cat masks template)

template includes two different cat masks, each in color and black & white, that you can use to make up your own masks in a few ways.

ready-to-go
supplies needed: paper and scissors
instructions: just print the color version of the mask, cut, and wear!

coloring time
supplies needed: paper, scissors, and crayons
instructions: print the back & white mask template, color, cut, and wear.

(for all versions) add elastic by stapling/gluing/sewing to sides of mask OR you can follow this tutorial from Suburbia Soup to attach your mask to a pair of glasses (genius!).

fun with felt
supplies needed:
one felt sheet each light pink, gray, black, and white
scissors, pen, glue or Pellon® EZ-Steam II tape
(optional) sewing machine and/or needle & thread

instructions:
1. print the black & white mask template and mask outline.
2. use pen to trace templates onto felt. (hint: trace on to the back of felt so that you won't see pen on your finished mask.)
3. cut out individual pieces (ie. nose, ears, whiskers) and mask background (use outline template) from appropriate colors of felt.
4. place pieces on background and glue in place. (optional: tack in place with EZ-Steam tape and stitch either by hand or with sewing machine. whiskers can also be sewn by hand or machine instead of cut from felt.)
5. wear!

should you be interested in turning your cat costume into a Super Cat costume, just add one superhero mask and one cape. my go-to cape tutorial is The Long Thread's Superhero Cape. i've made this cape quite a few times, like here and here, and i can't resist this awesome flashback photo from Kahlin's super-hero seventh birthday.

super-hero girlies

these girls do love a good cape! i think these will get plenty of wear, which satisfies my i-don't-want-to-waste-effort-on-something-that-will-only-be-worn-once rule.

you can check out my previous halloween costumes here: abby cadabby tutorial, last-minute ladybug, tinkerbell pajamas, dorothy and a cheetah.

shop news: spacemen, florals, and free shipping!

i received more awesome fabrics from yuwa yesterday, and they are now listed in the shop!!

this cotton lawn floral in navy has been extremely popular, and i'm excited to now have the full range of colors in stock. these soft cotton lawns are perfect for garments, and i'm tempted to make myself a new pillowcase out of one too!

don't miss these beautiful lawns: *new* strawberry print on pink, plus whimsical light blue and vintage-inspired pink and purple florals.

and, oh boy! these space men... i swoon. tiny floating astronauts, aliens, space ships, and even sparkly stars, on 100% cotton japanese oxford cloth. while this fabric has slightly more weight than a quilting cotton, it still has a great drape, and would be great for clothing, bags, and so many other projects! i just might have a few yards in the washing machine already...

also new in the shop is a cotton hemp/linen blend floral fabric that has a beautiful texture and feels amazing. and the real beauty in in how fabulously it washes up. according to yuwa, "while leaves the rustic texture, and feels soft and I eat it." now, i'm quite certain that google translate has completely butchered that, but i love it so i'm keeping it. because i totally want to eat this.

to help prepare for selfish sewing week, i'm offering free shipping on any orders over $25 (international included!) through this friday evening. might i suggest a copy of the bess top pattern along with some beautiful cotton lawn to make yourself a new shirt?

for free shipping, just use code "selfishsewing" during checkout.

and fyi: i'm sharing a tutorial for a Cuddle Fabrics Travel Pillow over on the Shannon Fabrics blog today. you can check it out plus enter to win a yard of Cuddle Fabric right here!

sewing: doGuincho's bubble shorts

i'm happy to have the bubble shorts by doGuincho pattern tour stopping by today!

earlier this month (last month?), Marta from doGuincho emailed to ask if i would test her first pattern, the bubble shorts. remember these amazing bubble shorts she made during shorts on the line? i was smitten with them, so of course i jumped at the chance to make my own.

when my girls both informed me that they weren't interested in bubble shorts (sillies), i decided to whip up a pair for my favorite little moxie girl, Jane... Jane of Jill of Made with Moxie, that is.

i was seriously impressed with the bubble shorts pattern. the instructions are great, the pattern pieces drafted perfectly, and the illustrations are perfection. super duper extra impressed, i tell you. i'm a big fan of clean construction methods and well thought-through designs, and this pattern offers both. plus an adorable end product. well done, Marta.

Jane's size three bubble shorts are made with a fun number print from 2wenty Thr3e by Eric and Julie Comstock; the lining and waistband are a dandelion stripe from Lotta Jansdotter's Glimma line. from what i understand, she put them on straight out of the post and ran off to play. sounds like a win to me, and how fun do they look on this little woodsy adventure?

you can read more about the bubble shorts pattern here, and grab your own copy in the doGuincho etsy shop.

selfish sewing week, day one. what i made: self-drafted leggings.

i thought i might be smart and make some stuff ahead of time so i could post maybe a day ahead and not feel all crazy this week. but it turns out that the three blog hops, tutorial, and guest post i had already committed to for last week sort of got in the way. as you can imagine after all of that, i was more than ready for this week to get started!

i got started on a muslin for self-drafted leggings yesterday, made a trip to Jo-Ann for some knits and stretch denim, and i got about 40 yards of fabric through pre-washing. which means that this morning, i was in good shape to get started on version two of my leggings!

ssw day one instagrams

as i listed in my top ten maybes post, i used this leggings tutorial by Cal Patch on etsy. i had a few rise issues that i needed to work through for the fit i wanted, and found these posts from Sunni of a fashionable stitch to be very helpful: most common pant alterations, crotch depth alterations, and crotch length alterations. i recommend reading all of them, or bookmarking them at the very least. and there are way more on her blog under the trouser sewalong tag, should you need those. another tip for you... Sunni carries rolls of medical exam paper in her shop, which i totally need after going through most of a roll of swedish tracing paper in the last few days!

here are my leggings v.2, made out of this poly/rayon heathered knit in gray, and paired with a bess top tunic! they are SO comfy and nice and thick, and are perfect for pretty much anything, particularly for anyone who wishes she could live in leggings, should you know anyone like that...

selfish sewing week day one: self-drafted leggings

and because Brenna took a lovely nap today, i had time to try my hand at another pair! this time, i added 2" of fabric for additional ease at the center line of the leggings for a looser fit. i made these pants from this stretchy cotton gauze, in the hopes that they would make perfect pj pants. they do!

selfish sewing week day one: self-drafted leggings

one other thing that i love about these leggings/pants is that i used 2" wide elastic for the waistband of both. i just grabbed a pack of it on a whim, and i'm so glad that i did! it's way comfier than 1/2" elastic and much sturdier than yoga-esque waistbands. as much as i love a good knit waistband, they just don't work with leggings for me.

so there's one item crossed off my maybe list.... what to tackle next?

selfish sewing week: rice-filled hot pad tutorial

today's selfish sewing week featured stitcher is Kim from Kim's Krafts!

* * *

So when I tell people that I sew they seem to think that all I do is make myself stuff....while this is sometimes true, a lot of the stuff that I sew is custom ordered (which I love to do!) or is made for a gift. When I heard about Selfish sewing week being co-hosted by my pal Rachael over at Imagine Gnats, I had to join in.

My first concern was that I would have to make clothes....I have done a dress or 2 and they really aren't my thing...so when she said it didn't have to be I told her to count me in!

Like almost everyone I know, I have sore back issues, whether it's from being hunched over my machine all day or working at my "real" job all day, nothing feels better than a nice hot pad on my lower back. I have been meaning to make a rice-filled one that can be reheated in the microwave and I figured that this was the time to do it!

Now, to be honest, I didn't have the time to start from scratch, so I used the tutorial from Sew4home to base mine off of.

Some of the things that I did different was that I add to the length and width to make it a little bigger for me. I also declined to use the rick-rack....I'm not really a rick-rack kind of person

I scrounged in my stash and found some grey duck cloth and a pre-quilted white with a little padding to it. My original idea was also to make a cover for it but I couldn't find anything I like, so I think that I will just use a spare pillow case for the time being.

It is really a simple process to make this. Sew a rectangle from the 2 pieces (right sides togethee) with an opening in one end and turn inside out. I decided to reinforce the stitching by sewing along the 3 edges (not one with opening for right now) with a 1/8 in seam

I measured in half and drew a line and then measured the 2 halves in half and drew lines. That way I have 4 sections to fill and sew. I used 3 cups of rice for each section.

Practice definitely made perfect on this project. On the first section I used my regular foot and just a couple of pins.....not good. As I did more, I changed to my zipper foot and pinned the heck out of each line. I also used my fav Aurifil thread #5004 for it's strength.

This helped the rice stay where it belonged and not escape. As you can see, by the end I was able to sew a nice straight line! lol

I wasn't sure how much rice I would need, so I bought a 10 lb bag....here's what was left....

I definitely used over half of it.....

Then it was time to test it out. It was recommended to start low and work your way up- time-wise- in the microwave. Also to be sure to keep it as open and possible and to flip in over. Mine is kind of big and the microwave here is kind of low on the wattage end of things, so I had to keep it in there for a few minutes to get the right temperature. Just be sure not to keep it in too long so that you don't burn the rice!!

This was super simple to make... could be finished in 30 minutes if the rice behaves itself.

Thanks for following along! Stop by Kim's Krafts to say "hi," and I hope you have a wonderfully selfish week!!

~Kim

selfish sewing week: day two makings

selfish sewing week, day two. what i made: night vision ninja pajamas.

sometimes you make a project and you're pretty satisfied and your husband says, "you look like Johnny Cash in your all black pjs." but then you might sneak into the room all goofy-like in your black pjs, and he might decide to call you a ninja. and if you have a blog and photoshop, you might then google ways to simulate night vision photos and stage an impromptu after-dark photo shoot. and then maybe you'll laugh and laugh at your silly self before happily going to bed in your new comfy pjs.

so... after i finished up my black leggings-esque pajama pants yesterday, i knew i wanted to make a matching top but had no real plan in mind for what style of top i wanted, let alone a pattern. i started digging through patterns, both paper and virtual, and came across the now out-of-print simplicity 2593. as good a place to start as any, i started cutting and sort of made decisions as i went. (hey, i figure you get a bit of latitude when it comes to pajama style, so why now improvise?)

here are some of the edits i made, for anyone keeping track:
1. cut out pattern in size 14 (a few size smaller than i measured) because i was using a 4-way stretch fabric, and the stated finished bust measurement of that size would allow for about 1" of ease.
2. cut out two each of shirt front and back so that i could make the shirt fully lined. my official reason is that the gauze is a little see through, but i was also dreading the idea of finishing the edges of this fabric and lining seemed an easier solution.
3. after the neckline was complete, i stitched 3/8" from the edge to form a casing. after putting 1/4" elastic through the casing, i stitched it in place at both sides (the original pattern had gathers here).

all in all, the top came together quickly, and it was pretty satisfying to just wing it. i wouldn't say the fit is perfect or that it's the most professionally sewn garment i own, but sometimes you just want a new pj shirt and you want it now!

because what else will you wear while making crazy faces, pretending to be a ninja cat burglar raccoon lunatic in your own back yard? also learned... i know nothing about ninjas.

today's selfish sewing week featured stitcher is Jennet of Feathered Nest Studio!

* * *

I want to start by thanking the amazing Rachael and Jill for creating Selfish Sewing Week! I totally do not normally sew for myself. I have lots of pretty fabric but I always think I should save it for something "important." Rachael and Jill get a big thanks for giving me the chance to use some of that fabric for myself... AND I even went out and bought fabric for a specific project for ME! Wild, right?

The selfish sewing project I am sharing with you today is truly an all-about me project I have been wanting to do for a long time. I've made some basic shorts and pants for my little guy, but never set aside the time to tackle a clothing item for myself. Then Rachael designed the Bess top (that pleating on the shoulders? I was in love!), and I knew if I ever had time, I needed one for myself. Enter Selfish Sewing Week...

I am very new to the whole making clothing thing, so I was worried I wouldn't be able to make this top, but the pattern Rachael designed is very beginner friendly. I read everything through a few times, checked out the pictures for each step, then got busy. I picked my fabrics (a dark chocolate brown jersey knit and a purchased-just-for-this-top Juliana Horner fabric).

I love this floral fabric so much-- it is both vintage feeling and fresh & modern. I confess, I rarely pin unless I absolutely have to, but since the pattern directions emphasized pinning the jersey well to avoid it moving on you, I took that to heart.

I've never used so many pins. Looks a bit like some horror show torture instrument, but it is only momentary, trust me. I sewed everything together, which I broke up over a couple nights because of my schedule, but it is truly a top you can have done in a day. The top actually came together amazingly well. I picked the tunic length with the lower neckline, not because I like showing off a lot of skin but because I was insanely worried that I would make this top and then not be able to get it over my head. It's not that I have some insanely large noggin or anything, I am just a crazy worrier. You will see in my "done" pictures that it fit over my head just fine-- so fine, in fact, that next time I will try the higher neckline.

When I wore this top, I received lots of compliments. In fact, two people liked it so much, they suggested I make each one their own as a "gift" some time. Yeah, maybe after Selfish Sewing Week is done! ;)

I loved it paired with this belt I had.

I think Selfish Sewing went to my head; I can't even stand up straight in that picture. I hope you experienced that giddy high of making something for yourself this week, too! Stop by my blog, Feathered Nest Studio, to see what else I'm making for Selfish Sewing Week.

selfish sewing week, day three. what i made: the nora bag.

yay! i finished the number one item from my selfish sewing top ten maybes, a new purse!

funny thing about the nora bag... this was the first pattern i drafted on my own ever, more than three years ago! (check out this way old post for some of the back-in-the-day versions. it's so funny to look back at old posts, isn't it?) the nora bag was originally drafted as a custom purse for my friend Terri, and i think that most of the women in her family ended up with one.

there is something about the geometric shape that has always appealed to me, and even though i haven't made one in ages, when it was time to make a new bag i thought i'd dust off the old pattern. (conveniently, i recently cleaned my crafty closet so i actually found it, no small miracle.)

this bag is completely reversible with a zippered pocket on each side (zipper pocket tutorial here). i also pieced my fabrics together to make a pleated pouch pocket for the exterior (you can find my tutorial for pouch pockets here). up until i added that pocket, i was loving the fabrics, loving the pattern, but just not loving the project overall. somehow that pocket just made me fall in love with the whole bag... don't you love it when it works out that way?

and how great are those fabrics? the solid is a lightweight denim i've been hoarding from a trip to fabric row in Philly. and the printed fabric... well, that is a handprinted print in gold on cream denim from Baker Street Fabrics, and i am so smitten with it!! you might remember that i used a print from Baker Street for these prefontaine shorts (that have been worn exactly never, so much for my excitement over Brenna choosing such awesome fabric).

*bonus alert* in honor of selfish sewing week, Sarah of Baker Street Fabrics is hosting a fab giveaway for two handprinted fat quarters!! just stop by her blog, Sew What Sherlock, to enter!

i'm partial to a bag with a cross-body strap, so i knew that i wanted to make these straps long enough for that. thanks to some lovely hardware from Sewing Patterns by Mrs. H, i was able to make the strap adjustable! now if i want to change it up and wear it over my shoulder, i can. and even if i don't decide to do that, i can adjust all i want for wearing with bulky winter coats that will be here before we know it.

you can check out the selection of hardware from Mrs. H right here. i feel like such things can be a real pain to find, so i'm always happy to know of a good source.

i would like to scan in the nora pattern and have it available here as a free download/tutorial. of course, i've been saying that for about a year now, but maybe actually making this bag and posting it will get the ball rolling there... what do you think? would you like to make up a nora bag? leave a comment to let me know!

what have YOU been making?? here are some items that stood out in the selfish sewing flickr group:

selfish sewing week: sol hoodie

today's selfish sewing week featured stitcher is Laura of Behind the Hedgerow!

Today I want to share a project that illustrates why we should all push ourselves, be fearless, and sew beyond our comfort zone.

Top Ten lists are a regular feature on my blog. A few weeks ago I wrote a list of Top 10 Autumn Selfish Sewing Patterns. The Sol hoodie by Jamie Christina made it to my number one spot. So, when Rachael contacted me asking if I'd like her to gift me the pattern in order to review it for Selfish Sewing Week you can imagine my response - a resounding 'Heck yeah!'.

Once I received the pattern I fumbled a little but then took a deep breath and a step forward (and a slight proverbial kicking of myself for not noticing sooner that there were lots of elements here that I was not familiar or comfortable with). What I saw before me was 7 pattern pieces, linings, ribbons and fabric almost entirely in knit (not that I'm scared of knits or anything!!)...and a zip. That's right, a zip...in knit...that goes right down the length of the your whole body (leaving no room to hide!). Never one to back down from a challenge, I simply told myself I would make this work (although with a fair amount of trepidation due to the fact that it's a guest post....for Selfish Sewing Week itself).

So, I chose the fabric - a sparkly (yup, sparkly!) medium-weight knit fabric, blue floral ribbon and a soft, blue flannel for the hood lining - and got to work. The pattern is very detailed with lots of helpful illustrations (I particularly like that Jamie put the fabric legend at the top of each page so you're not constantly flipping backwards and forwards in the instructions...it's the little things!). The style is a fitted, zipped cardigan with a large hood and extra-long sleeves with cuffs with thumb openings.

Do you like my 'snowflake'? Actually it's my son's first attempt at throwing a pot (my step-father is a potter).

My measurements fell in between a size small and medium. I sewed the size medium and it fits - but is quite snug. This is designed to be a fitted cardigan so if you want something more slouchy then I'd go up a size. I didn't make many alterations to the pattern - I used the ribbon for the edges (she also gives instructions for using fabric bands) and I decided to line the hood (which is optional).

Why be fearless?

I'm sure you've all heard that saying before - something like 'beyond your comfort zone is where the magic happens.' For sewing it's no different. Now, I'm not as brash as to say that my hoodie is magic (even if it is sparkly :-) ), but the act of going beyond what feels easily achievable does make me a better sewist. Let me explain.

The danger with trying to perfect a craft is that one can become conservative in his/her approach - trying to get each step and every detail perfectly correct. When trying something new I don't hold myself up to the same standard - the inner critical voice is less vocal and the freedom to try and the freedom to make mistakes grows. Some of you may have listened to Ken Robinson's TED talk about creativity in education. To summarise, he says that creativity is being taught out of children because mistakes are so stigmatised - as if making a mistake is the worst thing one can do. In order for creativity to flourish one has to not fear mistakes. I totally agree - whether it be for our children in education or, in this case, for our sewing.

I didn't want that fear of mistakes to inhibit me here. I was bold and fearless and just went for it! And, guess what?! Things turned out pretty ok. Perfect? Well, of course not (just for the record - when you're installing a zip into knits make sure you stabilise your fabric so it's not stretching as you sew, leaving one side much longer than the other...yes, I speak from experience!). But I learned a lot along the way - technical skills as well as my ability to adapt and use my own bank of knowledge to work through tricky situations.

Final Thoughts

I loved this project for the process and the end result in equal measure. It pushed me and forced me to grow a little bit and, at the end, I have a new cardi! An interesting side note, when I first considered this hoodie I was (mentally) in an Autumnal wood - think crunching golden leaves, wood-burning stoves, mushrooms, lots of oranges, yellows and browns - but it ended somewhere in Scandinavia! It reminds me of a Nordic winter - ice, snow and clear blue skies. Funny how sewing can take you in so many unexpected directions...if we all just remember to be FEARLESS!

Moonlit Winter Landscape by Berndt Lindholm (1841 - 1914, Finland)

Thanks for reading everyone. I hope you are all being fearless this week and feeling amazing doing it! If you can pull yourself away from your sewing machines for just a few more minutes, I'd love to see you over at Behind the Hedgerow! Sewing is the best thing ever, am I right?! Laura x

sewing: peanut baby free pattern

i'm beyond excited to share with you something that's been in the works for a while... my peanut baby free pattern and tutorial for Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores!

that's right, my friends!! a few months ago, the lovely folks at Jo-Ann asked to feature me during the month of october as part of the Creativity Made Simple Campaign.

true story... i forwarded the email to Nick immediately to ask him "are they saying what i think they're saying?" and when we both a little in shock, i ended up emailing Jo-Anns back with apologies for being derpy (yes, i actually said that), but was i confused here? considering that the current featured creativity influencer was Tori Spelling... well, i kept imagining chatting with Donna at the Peach Pit about crafting and pinching myself!

and just like that, there i am on the Jo-Ann website!! you can read some of my thoughts on creativity here, and find tons of great creative inspiration in my "Create with Rachael Gander of imagine gnats" guest pinterest board.

the peanut baby project is designed to be simple, fun, and (most of all!) cuddly. you can use knits, wovens, or upcycle old sweaters, t-shirts, or sheets to create your own. the peanut baby is designed to have both "awake" and "asleep" faces to choose between during play. get the full Peanut Baby free pattern and step-by-step instructions here. (also, you can click here to download the pattern template as a pdf.)

i'm really proud of this collaboration, and i hope you enjoy my project! the folks at Jo-Ann have been extremely supportive and wonderful to work with, and i am thankful to them for this opportunity. like many of you, i grew up shopping for craft supplies and finding inspiration at my local Jo-Ann store, and it's really exciting to have a chance to give back some creative inspiration.

happy stitching!

ps. i would be remiss if i didn't send a huge thank you to my friend (and a personal inspiration) Marissa of Marissa Bowers art*design*photo for not only taking lovely photos of me, but for helping me to get the perfect shot of my peanut babies!!

whew, it's been quite a week! and i'm feeling chatty, so....

i celebrated my 36th birthday on sunday (thanks to all of you for the happy wishes!), and it was a lovely day. weekend, really. the girls took me to the movies, i got to spend some me-time with my sewing machine, Nick and Kahlin made homemade pasta for dinner, we ate chocolate cake, and i got a fancy new 50mm lens. yep, it's awesome!

on monday, my peanut baby project for Jo-Ann Stores went live and the response has been awesome... a few you have already made up your own peanut babies!! really, there is nothing better than inspiring people to make things! fact: i have the coolest job ever.

on tuesday, i stopped by Sew Sweetness for Purse Palooza to review the green living market bag by Bari J. this is one great bag! if you're interested in making your own, you can find it available here as a pdf or here in paper form.

purse palooza 2013: green living market bag

yesterday - spoiler alert: this might be the coolest thing from the whole week - i sent the meridian cardi pattern (both girls and womens version) out to testers!! can you believe that one super fab tester already finished one? *cough* Sew What Sherlock *cough* craziness, i tell you! and SO very great.

here's one of the first versions i made of the meridian cardi, in a girls size 8. Kahlin loves it because when she twirls it spins... which reminds me that i still need to finish the sleeves so she can wear it! confession: i've been wearing the one i made myself without finishing the sleeves. ha! sometimes i just lose a little steam at the last step of a project. anyone else??

i'm hoping to have at least the girls version (sizes 5-14) ready to go before KCW starts on the 21st! and man, do i have a lot of things planned for that week. for starters, my poor girls have zero pants.

today i'm sharing a ladybug cape tutorial as part of the Handmade Halloween series from Palak of Make it Handmade and Heather of Feather's Flights. this cape was for Kahlin's costume two years ago and it's a project that (at six) she was able to help put together. plus, the girls are still using it for dress-up. yay capes!

crafting with kids: DIY rabbit sock dolls

my two girls have definitely been bit by the crafting bug, so i'm always looking for new kids' crafting projects. and a cute craft that comes in a little kit all ready to make? yep, that's exactly my speed!

enter Wholeport... they sell all things crafty, from embroidery supplies to everything you need for handmade soap. when i showed the girls the variety of sewing kits available, they went gaga for these rabbit sock dolls!

aren't they adorable?? the very day that our package arrived, the girls dug in and we got started crafting. this project definitely required a fair amount of mama assistance, with machine sewing tiny rabbit bodies and ears. in fact, even with mama's help, we sort of lost a little bit of one rabbit's ears. oops! one rabbit and one bear-type-thing are still a plenty cute couple!

the directions are not in english, but they do include step-by-step pictures. let's be honest... i rarely read the words anyway, so we barely noticed!

the girls made a good team. Brenna was in charge of stuffing while Kahlin took the hand stitching duties. each of our little animal friends ended up with their very own distinct personality...

just like these sweet girls :) want your own? get your rabbit sock doll sewing kit right here.

happy stitching!
